Hand Poked vs Machine tattoos

This isn’t my usual type of blog post. Normally I write a lot about my journey through education and my mental health but a few months ago I wrote a post about my fresh ideas for the blog, new topics I was thinking of writing about and when I mentioned about talking more on the topic of tattoos I had a few people get back to me telling me they’d love to read about my experience. So here we go.

After around a month of being in Leicester I decided to get my second tattoo. I was in a large city with multiple amazing tattooists in it and I was excited to explore and get a new experience. When I contacted a tattoo artist I’d been eyeing up for a while, Mike Love at Black Market Tattoo, I was so excited. However, when I found out he only did hand poked I must admit, I was a bit hesitant. My first tattoo was done with a machine and hand poked it such a controversial tattoo method (mainly when done at home) but after some encouragement from a tattoo group I’m part of on Facebook (Treacle Tatts) I decided to book in and just go for it. And I’m certainly glad I did.

The tattoo came out with perfect black lines, detailed just how I wanted it. Most people talk about how much less it hurts when having a hand poked tattoo but I feel like my opinion is invalid because my machine tattoo was on my ribs (one of the most painful places to get tattooed apparently) and my hand poked on was on the outside of my arm so it would have been much less painful anyway. The only down side of the hand poked tattoo was that it took a bit longer than a machine tattoo would due to the fact that they are doing each dot one at a time by hand. I didn’t even end up seeing this as a negative though because Mike was so lovely to talk to and I was so comfortable that I felt I was finally getting a couple of hours of me time to relax and forget about university.

I love both my machine tattoo and my hand poked equally and honestly I would love to experience both styles again maybe with a pop of colour and see how it compares when coloured ink is involved.

Have you ever had a hand poked tattoo?
